GROW: Bonsai or Sunflowers It’s Your Choice
Who Needs Normal?
In order to grow a legacy-level business, you must be ready to color outside of the lines. In fact, it's probably better if you have unlined paper. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about seat-of-the-pants discipline. As a matter of fact, you must be even more focused. Legacy-level mastery is about cultivating a path to your future, and showing others how to do the same.
No matter what industry you represent, someone is watching you for guidance. If you sound like and look like everyone else, you'll be lost in the miasma of advice. Rather, you want to stand out like the first pink blossoms on the cherry trees in Washington, DC. Your fragrance, your beauty and your bold confidence will set you apart as a thought leader - not a trend copier.
Grow Your Own Way
Statistically, a new home-based business is started every 12 seconds! Although you could look at that as competition, why not use it as fuel, instead. Why? Because working from home is a $427 BILLION dollar per year industry. On the positive side, 70% of home based businesses are successful within three years of starting, compared to only 30% of traditional businesses. Markedly, women are more likely to be in it for the long-haul than men are. You are part of an emerging economy that demands to be seen.
As a result, it is important to differentiate yourself from every other soap-seller, jewelry diva and clever crafter. And though those words may sound harsh, they aren't meant to be. Unfortunately, this is still the way the world at large still sees the work from home professional. Consequently, the responsibility lays squarely on your shoulders to show them why you are different.
As a reader of my blog, you have undoubtedly heard the same thing from me over and again - be uniquely you. And that is because you will never make real money in your business as long as you look like every other makeup maven, and essential oil siren. The question is, HOW do you stand apart from the crowd?
It's about your predetermined growth pattern. And guess what...you get to decide.
Bonsai Boutique Growth
The bonsai tree has an interesting history. Typically we picture a wrinkled man trimming away at a a tiny pine tree, and spouting ancient wisdom about patience. There are some bonsai trees in China and Japan that are more than 1000 years old! Surprisingly, the prices for these pint-size treasures can range up to $400,000! Yes...for a tiny tree - in a tray - on the table.
A bonsai tree is the perfect picture of a Boutique-Style business. And what I mean by this, is that you craft your business for the selected few, rather than the masses.
You choose your growth pattern to serve a few at a time - perhaps in small classes. Or, you determine to charge premium prices, which of course limits the people who will apply for your services.
With a Bonsai Boutique Business, you choose intimacy by cultivating a hands-on approach. Your clients and customers get more of YOU. Together with patience and clarity, you will grow a Bonsai Boutique Business that will last for a long time.
Perhaps though, you want to create a wide-open field of community. You will create a business that looks more like a field of sunflowers.
In this business model, your goal is to open up opportunity for a vast number of people. However, it's important to remember, you don't grow all types of flowers. You are creating a field of sunflowers. Or tulips. Maybe even lavender. The secret is to be clear on the one question you want to help people answer, and then grow your field with those people.
With this in mind, you likely offer your products and services at lower prices. The people you serve get less of your personal one on one attention. And that's okay, because they are likely people who prefer to be part of a movement, rather than in the inner sanctum.
Bullfinch said that a sunflower is a "symbol of constancy." I love this, because the seeds of new growth are found within the heart of the sunflower - up front and center. You can cultivate the field for a particular kind of growth, or let it grow wild. The choice is yours. Be that as it may, a sunflower field growing in nature is seasonal. Without some care, you'll end up with scraggly growth. However you decide to grow your field, just know that if you don't tend to it some, it will eventually die.
The Garden of Your Business
It is important to create a core vision of the business you intend to cultivate. However, that doesn't mean you can't incorporate other growth elements. Your business garden may begin as a community and morph into a boutique. Or you may continue to have a core boutique business and offer an occasional garden open house.
To help get some clarity, ask yourself these questions:
With a few basic answers, you can begin to lay out the path of your business. And here's a little encouragement, if after a few months you realize you don't like the direction things are growing, you can change. It's okay, because after all, you're coloring outside of the lines.
